Cohort 5 FAQ: Instructor Academy Collective

About the program

Cohort 5 is a 6-hour line dance certification preparatory training from MBSD, Inc. and the Instructor Academy Collective, built to take you from passion to professional.

Who is it for?

Line dancers who want to start teaching, and instructors ready to sharpen their craft or grow their classes into an LLC or 501(c)(3). Whether you are just starting or a seasoned line dancer, there is a place for you.

What will I learn?

• History and heritage of Soul and Urban Line Dance

• Community, culture and etiquette

• Terminology, counts and 8-count phrasing

• Step sheets and what changes the wall

• Music structure, phrasing and cueing

• Choreography and videography 101

• Teaching every level: beginners, seniors, mixed levels and adaptable bodies

• Leading the room: discipline, disruptive students and avoiding burnout

• Safety, waivers and the instructor gear bag

• Business setup, branding, growth and social media

• Certification and licensing guidance, plus your personal 90-day plan

What do I earn?

A Level I Certified Line Dance Educator certificate, a place in the Instructor Academy Collective registry, and the Line Dance Instructor Manual and Assessment Study Guide. Certificates are valid for three years.

Format and dates

The session is 6 hours with the same curriculum whether you join in person or virtually.

• In person: Friday, December 18, in Houston, TX.

• Virtual: Sunday, December 20, 2026

Can I switch between in person and virtual?

Choose one date when you register.

What should I bring?

Comfortable shoes you can move in, laptop, water and something to take notes with. Virtual attendees need a device with a camera and space to move.

Registration and prerequisites

Register and pay by Wednesday, November 18, then complete your prerequisites by Friday, December 11. Prerequisites are required to attend either session.

1. Nov 18: Register and pay

2. After you register: You receive your prerequisite assignments. Your Personal Line Dance Consultant reaches out to schedule your Skillset Elevation Experience.

3. Dec 11: Submit your completed prerequisites. They are scored before the session.

4. Dec 18 or Dec 20: Attend in person or virtually.

Why register by November 18?

It gives you 30 days to receive and complete the prerequisites before the session.

What are the prerequisites?

Assignments that show your foundation, such as analyzing dances and step sheets, and breaking down music structure and cue points. You receive the details after you register.

What if I do not finish by December 11?

Prerequisites must be completed and scored before you can participate.

Cost and payment

The holiday special is $349, which is $50 off the regular $400 price, when you register and pay by November 18.

• What is included: The fee covers, the session, manual and study guide, assessment and certificate.

• Payment methods: All methods accepted

• Refunds and transfers: No refunds but switching to a different date is allowed twice.

Certification and what happens after

You become certified by completing the prerequisites, the session, the assessment and the practical, then your graduation assignment.

What is required?

• Complete and pass the prerequisites

• Attend and participate in every block of the session

• Teach a practical: 32 counts, taught live or on camera

• Pass the open-book Line Dance Instructor Manual and Assessment with 80% or higher

• Show professionalism on and off the floor

What happens at graduation?

You recite the Instructor Academy Oath, sign the Instructor Academy Collective registry and receive your recognition. Welcome to the Instructor Academy Collective, an extension of the Mind, Body and Soul Dancers family.
